Just One Of The Guys

DAMN, THIS FILM IS SO GOOD YOU GUYS. I've been waiting for this to come onto Netflix for about six months or close to it, as soon as I read up about it I knew it was my kind of film. Okay, so this film is basically She's THe Man, except ballsier (lolz pun) and she actually passes for a really cute guy! This film is a lot of fun, not too cheesey but 80s enough to satisfy your crazy fashion and lingo needs. Plus there is a baby Sherilyn Fenn and we all love her, right? Watch this is you like She's The Man, Better Off Dead and other such 80s comedies. Just don't take it too seriously!

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs

Again, I am so stoked to have this film at my fingertips whenever I need to be entertained, cheered up or feel like laughing my ass off. Like me, you might have CRUELLY DISMISSED this film when it first came out as some Dreamworks trash, but guess again motherfucker because this film is CRAZY GOOD. The voice cast should be enough to sell thsi to you (why was I never informed Bruce Campbell was in this on its release?) with the likes of Anna Faris, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg and Neil Patrick Harris completing a sort of who's who of hip comedy. This film has a lot of heart and laugh out loud funny bits (the looting TV is my favourite). Watch this if you like Despicable Me, Monsters vs Aliens and The Incredibles.

The Opposite of Sex

Christina Ricci shines in this twisted tale. Wickedly funny and totally bizarre with a very smart dialogue, I've loved this film since I saw it on late night Channel Five (of course) and it is criminally overlooked! Sometimes I forget that Ricci used to be this baby faced potty mouth kid but it's always good to remember! Watch this if you like Freeway.

Hansel and Gretel

This trailer doesn't do this film justice! It is much more low-key than that and lovely to look at. Watch this is you're into kitsch decor, SRSLY. Also if you're a fan of creepy kids, fairy tales and mysteries. It's not over the top scary, not really jumpy either so it's pretty perfect if you're a scaredy-cat like me! 

Rat Race

If you don't like this film and find it hilarious we ACTUALLY can't be friends any more. This is one of my favourites, it's totally stupid and amazing. I mean, it has John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, Seth Green and BRECKIN MEYER. What an ensemble cast! ISA RAAAACE! Watch this is you love super over-the-top comedies. AND THE TRAILER USES GREEN DAY'S NICE GUYS FINISH LAST. p.s off topic, that song also has a funny video.

I'm not going to show you the trailer for this because it is basically one spoiler after another, but take my word for it this a super smart and really darkly funny funny film about lots of strangers lives intertwining! It also has Elliot from E.T in it along with TOM HANK'S SON and Rachel Leigh Cook, so there's no reason not to watch it!

If you're looking for something to watch this Easter holidays, since its BLOODY FREEZING, here are some choices from good old Netflix for ya!

Tuff Turf

This 1984 film is quite possibly the most 80s film I have ever seen. Basically, the pulling power this film has is the fact that it has James Spader in it, in a leading role, sometimes shirtless and often in a leather jacket. I love James Spader, he is such a babe, and its nice to see him playing something other than a snotty, preppy kid (p.s. my favourite Spader performance is in Mannequin, obv). This film also had baby Robert Downey Jr (you can tell because he's credited just as Robert Downey) and has a pretty ace soundtrack. It's a great film to have a giggle at!

Drop Dead Gorgeous 

If you have never seen Drop Dead Gorgeous I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU. It is quite possibly the funniest film of all time? And there are so many familiar faces to spot and point out! This film is witty and darkly funny, and I always associate it with other films like Saved! and But I'm A Cheerleader, but I'm not quite sure why. They're all kind of in the same vain I guess.

Teeth 

OH MY GOD, I AM SO GLAD THIS FILM IS FINALLY ON NETFLIX. There is no shame, NO SHAME in liking this film, it is funny and weird and well directed and amazingly acted. When this film first came out most people were put off even before they gave it a chance, but it's a great story of sexual awakening and all that. Plus it has Hale Appleman in it and he is bufffff.  Watch this film if you want an original, tongue in cheek horror to keep you occupied and I guarantee you'll still be talking about it for days afterwards!

Here are my top picks for this week! I may also start doing Lovefilm top picks soon, does anyone use Lovefilm? I have both (for Lovefilm I only have the instant streaming package) and both of them together only comes to a tenner a month which is a bargain in my eyes!

1. The Men Who Stare At Goats

I'm not really sure why this film got so much flack when it came out, I thought it was amazing! I mean, it's kind of a dream cast? It has Clooney and Spacey and of course, my number one beard boo Jeff Bridges and they are all HILARIOUS in this. The story is insane but really fun and it has one of the best 'tripping on LSD' scenes I've ever seen in film! Watch this if you want to see Clooney doing something a bit different and if you want to be taken on a mystical journey.

2. A League Of Their Own

(This trailer is the exact opposite of this film!)

Where has Geena Davis been hiding recently? I love her so much, she's one of my top actresses of all time. A League Of Their Own is a great girl power film and I don't even like sports films so it must be good!

3. Phenomena

(this trailer is pretty gory)

Phenomena is a brutal film! Right from the very beginning. It's also really stylish! I went in to watch this with no knowledge about it and within five minutes I was like "damn son, this looks like a Dario Argento film" and it turns out it totally was! Also there is an adorable chimpanzee, and who doesn't love a film with a chimpanzee in it FOR NO REASON??? Phenomena stars a very young Jennifer Connelly and should be a staple for any serious horror fan.

1. The Switch

THIS FILM YOU GUYS. This film is amazing. Okay so first things first, if this film didn't have JBatez and JeffyG then it wouldn't be half as good. The plot is absolutely insane but the cast definitely holds up this film. It's quirky and totally not the usual romcom type fare. Sebastian, the little kid in this, is frigging TOO CUTE FOR WORDS and basically the whole film is great. It's nice to see Jason playing an asshole, that's how I like him best. You should give this a watch if you're looking for something fun to kill some time or if like me, you're trying to watch every Jeff Goldblum film ever made. Sure the moral compass of... everyone in this film is questionable, but it wouldn't be half as fun if they weren't all self obsessed.

2. Wild Child

Watching Wild Child reignited my passion for crazy teen films. I love a film that has a whole 'character outside of their environment' vibe and I totally love that this one is a clash of American and English cultures! All the girls in this film are fantastic, especially Juno Temple and the girl who plays the baddie.  I never went to a boarding school but I like to think it would be a little like this, my own worst nightmare but not so bad in the end! Watch this if you like to see annoying girls get their comeuppance!

3. Darkman

Darkman has got to be Liam Neeson's best role (to date!). Darkman is a great darkly funny comic film, Darkman has got to be the one of the best "superhero" creations. It's got some excellent gore and really bad baddies! Sam Rami can't really do any wrong in my eyes (even Spiderman 3) and this screams his directing style all the way through. My favourite scene is the elephant scene, but the whole film is very enjoyable! Watch this if you want to see something a bit quirky and a superhero film with copious swearing!

I'm adding a regular feature to the blog where I give out my top picks for Netflix UK, possibly because I watch way too much Netflix, or just because I feel like there's a lot of stuff that people are looking over! I'll choose three films a month, hopefully, unless I run out (c'mon Netflix add some more films!). 

1. In The Mood For Love

As a massive fan of Wong Kar-Wai (Chungking Express tops my list of favourite films frequently) I was super stoked to find that a few of his films were available on Netflix. Teaming up with the most handsomest man in the world (Tony Leung) again, this film is just a work of art. It's full of the director's signature moves, tight spaces and slow-mo shots. The story is slow and thoughtful and incredibly interesting! It is set in 1960s Hong Kong and the wardrobe (the dresses especially) is absolutely lovely! Wong Kar-Wai has a knack of getting really understated but gripping performances out of his actors and this film definitely doesn't disappoint!

2. Tron

The original Tron appeals to my art preference so much that I wonder if it was made for me before I was even born. The graphic style with neon colours and grids make me drool everytime I watch this. Of course, you can no longer talk about Tron without bringing up Tron Legacy and whilst I really enjoyed that too, I'm of the opinion that the very first Tron film looks a hell of a lot more pretty and was really a labour of love. The special effects which may seem outdated, can still be appreciated not to mention that absolutely killer soundtrack! Jeff Bridges plays the main role in this film and he is so good in it that you never want him to leave the screen. Not to mention the bulging crotch areas, lolz!

3. Slackers

If you've watched something like fifteen seconds of that trailer then you probably think I've gone crazy. Just looks like a regular old gross-out college movie, right? WELL I'M AFRAID YOU'RE WRONG. Slackers is so amazing, I cannot even express enough how amazing it is! Firstly, let's look at the cast: Jason Segel when he was still cool, one of the Pete's from Pete and Pete, Devona Sawyer before he disappeared forever and Jason Schwartzman's unibrow!! What's not to like?! Okay, so the plot is pretty dumb but the actors in this totally carry it, especially Jason Schwartzman who is hilarious and weird all at once and threw himself into this role with abandon. Just give it a chance, sometimes everyone needs to unwind with a goofy movie! (Not to be mistaken for A Goofy Movie which should be watched once a day forever more amen.)
